Scotland Adventures with George, Laura and Katy

Here we are the first week of July and our Florida friends, George, Laura and Katy have arrived for a visit.
They spent the afternoon resting up, then we took them downtown for dinner and drinks.

We spent the next few days on a road trip and exploring the Isle of Skye, stopping along the way to enjoy the sights.

Including a beautiful waterfall,

and the ruins from the 13th-century Inverlochy Castle.
We stopped briefly for lunch in Ft. William.

We enjoyed beautiful views of the mountains and lochs along the way.
Our friends found the roads to be a bit daunting at times as we were on a lot of single track roads.  (A single track road is a road that permits two-way travel but is not wide enough in most places to allow vehicles to pass one another.  There are passing places spaced out along the way allowing cars to pass, sometimes having to reverse to do so.)
In their words, "Driving in near death conditions takes the fun out of photography."

The next morning we set out on a 4-5 mile hike (it felt more like 10) around Glen Brittle, the Cuillin Mountains, (the largest mountains on Skye) and the Fairy Pools.  The Fairy Pools are a series of small waterfalls flowing into the River Brittle, with shallow pools of crystal clear water.  Some are brave enough to take a dip in the very cool, crisp water.

There were several of these large rock stepping stone bridges, that made it an interesting hike.  Some of us with short legs had to make a mad leap across, while others merely just stepped.

It was a great hike and the sights were truly amazing, but now it was time to re-fuel, so our next stop was lunch at The Old Inn, and a tour of the Talisker Distillery.

We enjoyed our lunch, the whisky tour and a wee dram, and now it was time to set out for our next destination, Neist Point.  Our last trip to Neist Point was last year in very bad weather, so we were looking forward to seeing it again with better weather and somewhat blue skies.

The next morning we set out for our roadtrip home, stopping at the Eilean Donan Castle along the way.

Continuing down the road we stopped for lunch at the Castle Stalker Cafe, taking in the views of the Castle Stalker.
Castle Stalker is a four-story tower house set out on a tidal islet on Loch Laich.  You might recognize it from the last scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The next few days we spent relaxing and enjoying Helensburgh,
eating pizza at Mira Mare, (Katy's first pizza in 9 months) checking out the sites and shops of downtown, taking part in a pub quiz at Logie Baird, enjoying a beer in the beer garden at The Commodore, and enjoying a pint and wee dram at the Ashton.

The next day we hopped the train for a day trip to Edinburgh.
We took a double decker bus tour, toured the Edinburgh Castle, had lunch in a pub and did a little bit of shopping.

It was a whirlwind of a visit and it seem to fly by in no time at all.  We had a great time with our friends and hope that they got a wee taste of Scotland and come back soon for another visit.

Look for our upcoming blogs about our trip to Oslo, Norway, a visit with our friends Dino and Robin, a visit with our friend Alanna and our Fall European travels through Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy and Germany.

Cheers,
John and CJ
